NAPA VALLEY

Napa County is one of California's 58 counties, located north of the San Francisco Bay. It is 47 miles (77km) long and about 24 miles (38km) wide.
Napa Valley is the third largest California county in terms of wine grape acreage planted, after San Joaquin, and Sonoma. Its modern history starts in 1966 with the construction of Robert Mondavi Winery with 46,000 acres (18,620ha) of vines.
Napa County, in particular the Napa Valley A.V.A and its sub-appellation, is the best-known US wine region. For the most part, this reputation has been built on the strength of Napa Valley'x powerful Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-led Bordeaux-style blends. These outstanding wines are producesd by large, well-established wineries as well as by numerous small boutique wineries that have achieved "Cult" status.
Grapes has been grown in Napa since 1830s, and the first winery on the valley was establish in the 1860s. Now Napa has around 45,000 acres (18,000ha) with more than 400 wineries.

Calistoga A.V.A

Red, White and Rose:

Daytime temperatures tend to be warmer farther north, so Calistoga represents one of the hottest climates of the Napa Valley nested AVAs. It experiences several days above 100*F in the summer, although temperatures at night can easily fall into the 40s*F, because of the breezes from the Pacific that can penetrate the Macayacamas at the Chalk Hill Gap.

Principal varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah.

St. Helena AVA

Red, White and Rose:

Located in the narrowest part of the Napa Valley floor. This area experiences less fog, less wind, and more heat retention due to the narrowing of the valley floor. In addition to its plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, St Helena is planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, and several white varietals

Rutherford AVA

Red, White and Rose:

A moderately warm area known for its "Rutherford dust" is home of a unique soil type and climate, resulting in wines with firm tannins. This area is largely planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc.

OAKVILLE AVA

Red, White and Rose:

It is the second of the two most famous sub regions of Napa, where many exalted brands are located, also favoring Cabernet Sauvignon.

It is fairly warm area with a good deal of moderating influence from the night and early morning fog. Leading grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.

YOUNTVILLE AVA

Red, White and Rose:

It is further south, with a moderate marine influence by morning fog and the strong breezes off San Pablo Bay. Afternoons here are typically cooler than those located farther north in the Valley.

STAGS LEAP DISTRICT AVA

Red, White and Rose:

It is often referred to as a Valley Within a Valley as it is bounded by the towering Stags Leap Palisades to the east and rolling hills and the Napa River to the west. It is moderately warm area, somewhat cooled by afternoon winds. The bare rocks of Stags Leap itself and the surrounding hills radiate warmth, meaning that midsummer temperatures can reach as high as a 100*F, but typically remain in the mid-90'.

Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley AVA

Red, White and Rose:

It is just to the north of the town of Napa, with late afternoon breezes and morning fog providing cooler temperatures than the upper valley. Oak Knoll has a cool, well-balanced climate with a good deal of marine influence and fog that often remains until late-morning. Chardonnay is a leading Grape variety, as well as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Riesling.

Coombsville AVA

Red, White and Rose:

It is the newst addition to the Napa Valley appellations, created in 2011 in the hills east of Napa city. Thios is one of the cooler areas of Napa, located very close to the San Pablo Bay. Daytime temperatures in the summer can be as many as 10*F, lower than most other Napa AVA's. Due to the morning fog and humidity a portion of this area allows for the development of botrytis.

Carneros/Los Carneros AVA

Red, Whites

Usually just called Carneros. It is the southernmost appellation, exposes to the bay waters, which keeps temperatures from rising much above 80*F. This AVA is half in Napa Valley County and half in Sonoma County, comprising the entire north shore of San Pablo Bay. The rolling hills of Carneros are well-suited to cooler climate grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, much of which goes into Napa Valley's sparkling wine production.

HOWELL MOUNTAIN AVA

Red, White and Rose:

Norteast of St Helena, is a high elevation area similar to the AVAs located in the Mayacamas. Howell Mountain is located above the fog line on the eastern side of the Valley. This is the only appellation in Napa that is eletion-specific, with the boudaries drawn at the 1,400 foot (425m) contour while central portion of the area reach up to 2,400 feet (730m) in elevation. Principal graoe varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Viogner.

ATLAS PEAK AVA

Red, White and Rose:

East of Stags Leap District AVA, is a high elevation area also similar to the AVAs located in the Mayacamas. It is locates on the eastern side of the county in the Vaca Range and with vineyards planted at 760-2,600 feet (232-792m) above sea level. Summer temperatures rarely reaching above 90*F (32*C)Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the main grape variety.

CHILES VALLEY AVA

Red, White and Rose:

It is a long, thin intermountain valley, lying farter from the Napa River than any of the others regions with very warm days and cool nights. Chiles Valley is located somewhat to the east of the valley floor appellations and extends into hillsides of the Vaca Mountains. Summer days are fairly warm, but the vineyards at the higher elevation which goes as high as 1,200 feet (366m) get quiet chilly at night.

WILD HORSE VALLEY AVA

This region, located close to San Pablo Bay and share with Solano County, is another of the coolest areas of Napa. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the main grape varieties.

Mayacamas Mountains

Diamond Mountain District AVA

Red, White and Rose:

It is one of the three AVAs located in the Mayacamas Mountains. Diamond Mountain District AVA is the northermost one, located adjacent to Calistoga AVA. This is a moderately warm climate area, located along the border with Sonoma Temperatures in the summer can reach about 90*F and see less temperature fluctuation than those on the Valley floor below. Elevation range from 400 to 2,200 feet (122 to 792m).

Spring Mountain District AVA

It is adjacent to St Helena AVA.This region located along the border with Sonoma, is cool-to-moderate, depending on elevation and aspect. Typical Summertime highs reach 85*F (29*C)and elevation ranges from 6000 to 2,600 feet (183-172m)

MT. VEEDER AVA

It is a long appellation running from Oakville down to Carneros. This is cool-to-moderated climate area located along the border with Sonoma. Summertime highs average 85*F (29*C)elevations range from 500 to 2,600 feet (152-192m) with most vineyards above the fog line.
