The USA is the world's most important consumer of wine, and only France, Spain, and Italy make more of it. Canada has become a serious producer in recent years, and even México is starting to show signs of catching up.

ACCIDENTAL HYBRIDS

Once American and European vines coexisted on this continent new to wine, their genes commingled in random and spontaneous combinations from which varieties with less obvious foxiness emerged.

The Alexander grape, discovered in Pennsylvania, was the earliest of the accidental American-European hybrids. Catawba, Delaware, and Isabella followed.
