ORANGE WINES

ARE THESE WINES MADE FROM ORANGES?

NO! These wines are not made with oranges. Orange wine is very common in Georgia, often found in eastern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, and now made by winemakers as far apart as South Africa, Spain, and USA.

Orange Wine: It is a type of white wine made by leaving the grape skins and seeds in contact with the juice, creating a deep orange-hued finished product.

Orange wine is also known as a skin-contact white wine, skin-fermented white wine, or AMBER WINE. It is a type of wine made from white wine grapes where the grape skin are not removed, and stays in contact with the juice for day, even months.

The practice has a long history, dating back hundreds of years in Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and thousand of years in the Eastern European wine producing country of Georgia. This practices was popular again by Italian and Slovenian winemakers, after visiting Georgia

In Georgia skin-contact white wine is historically known as AMBER WINE.

These wines have been described as robust and bold, with honeyed aromas of jackfruit (a fleshy tropical fruit), hazelnut, brazil nut, bruised apple, wood varnish, linseed oil, juniper, sourdough, and dried orange rind. On the palate, they are big, dry, even have tannin like a red wine with a sourness similar to fruit beer. Often Orange wines are so intense.

The deep color of Orange wine comes from lignin in grapeseed.

UNION SACRE WINERY AND ORANGE WINE

Union Sacré is an homage to the Alsace region of France and beauty’s odd ability to build unexpected bridges. These are not wines of privilege and power, these are wines made from a lifetime of labor for the untelevised tables that unite the very heart of the world.

The wines of Union Sacré are focused on elegant, single vineyard, single varietal wines that are table friendly. The vineyards we source from are in very unique coastal Californian micro-climates which are frequented by morning fog and cold nights.
